The idea of Scotland becoming part of Canada is not as strange as it might first seem. In reality, the new world order should be less about sovereignty and more about trade.

Should Scotland become independent of the UK and EU, there is no reason why it couldn't join EFTA or have its own trade deals with the likes of Canada.

As Brexit looms, the UK will find the key to trade deals is flexibility. It's not simply about exporting goods but also about creating deeper links with trade partners including technology transfers, and allowing for more free movement for people.

If the UK wants trade deals with the likes of India, it must show flexibility and welcome alternative structures to benefit both the UK and the relevant trade partner.
